Elon Musk Hints Tesla Next “Big Thing” - Solar Roof Deployments Almost Tripling Sequentially

To create an entire sustainable energy ecosystem, Tesla also manufactures a unique set of energy products that enable homeowners, businesses, and utilities to produce and manage renewable energy generation, storage, and consumption. Homeowners can install solar panels or Solar Roof to power their home using 100% renewable energy and then store that energy in Powerwall, which makes electricity available during peak energy-use periods and at night, while also providing power during grid outages.

In Q2 2020, Tesla reported that Solar Roof installations roughly tripled compared to Q1. Now, the company reported that total solar deployments more than doubled in Q3 to 57 MW compared to the prior quarter, with Solar Roof deployments almost tripling sequentially.

"A future where we have beautiful roofs, generating energy, more resilient than a regular roof, that’s the future we want," Elon Musk said during Q3 2020 Earnings Call. "The solar roof is a killer product. This will become obvious next year."

In July, the company made home retrofit solar even more affordable in the U.S., while also offering an increased efficiency panel. At $1.49 per watt, the average Tesla solar system is now one-third less expensive than the industry. The average customer buying a large system in California will likely offset their system cost with a reduced electricity bill in approximately six years. Therefore, the new strategy is starting to have an impact.

For Solar Roof, installation time is a key area of focus to accelerate the growth of this program. This is why Tesla continues to employ hundreds of electricians and roofers to grow this business.

Installer teams are demonstrating the ever-increasing speed of solar roof installation. Weddle and Sons Roofing completed a 40 square (4000 square foot) 15kW Tesla Solar Roof installation near Topeka, Kansas. The team was able to complete the installation in just four days.

Also, in its report, Tesla said that it was able to install the Solar Roof in 1.5 days, which is a very important achievement and, subsequently, can guarantee the company a rapid growth in demand for this product.

Tesla's strong Solar Roof install team will lead to further growth in installations. This will accelerate the company's impact on sustainability by allowing people to obtain energy from the sun in an environmentally friendly--and increasingly affordable--way.
