Twitter will comply with European Union rules for controlling illegal online content after the platform has passed under Elon Musk's ownership. According to the information, the new owner personally assured the EU's industry chief of this.

Elon Musk has assured the European Commission that Twitter will comply with tough European rules to control illegal online content after the social network has passed under his ownership, sources in the European Union said on Monday, according to Reuters. In a previously unreported call last week, Musk told Thierry Breton, the EU's industry chief, that he plans to comply with the region's Digital Services Act.

Musk has reportedly agreed to hold a meeting with Breton in the coming weeks, according to a release from two EU officials. The conversation came after the EU's industry chief tweeted on Friday, “In Europe, the bird will fly by our 🇪🇺 rules.” He also attached his earlier tweet containing a video of their meeting in May.

Breton and Musk met in May, and at that time they agreed to comply with EU rules. The EU's industry chief explained the Digital Services Act to Musk. “It fits pretty well with what you think we should do,” Breton said. “I think it's exactly aligned with my thinking,” Musk responded in the May video.

The EU has approved rules that curb tech giants and require online platforms to do more to control illegal content online, with larger platforms requiring more moderators than smaller ones. Companies face a fine of up to 6% of annual global turnover for violating the Act.
