Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held a virtual meeting with Elon Musk to discuss SpaceX Starlink

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held a virtual meeting with Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Inc., during which they discussed potential investments by Tesla in Malaysia and the invitation for SpaceX to operate Starlink in the Southeast Asian country. The meeting took place on July 13 (July 14 Malaysia time) and lasted approximately 25 minutes. Anwar expressed his enthusiasm for Tesla's interest in investing in Malaysia and praised Elon Musk's initiative to have his companies established in the country. In an official statement, Anwar said — “I welcome the company’s interest and decision to invest in Malaysia, and Elon Musk’s willingness to come to Malaysia,” they wrote (quote in Malay language was translated). 

Their discussion revolved around plans to build a Tesla service center and SpaceX's potential to provide Starlink satellite service across the country, which aims to enhance internet access in rural areas and improve the global internet network with minimal physical infrastructure and land requirements. Anwar highlighted the positive impact this initiative could have on education, agricultural technology, and income generation. Minister Anwar shared photos via Twitter of the virtual meeting which show that SpaceX delivered a Starlink antenna to demonstrate its internet capabilities and the government likely used Starlink service to perform the video call with Mr. Musk (linked below). 

The virtual meeting included the participation of the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, and the Minister of Communications and Digital, YB Fahmi Fadzil. Anwar also mentioned that he congratulated and supported the government's initiative to open the Head Office, Service Center, and Experience Center for Tesla in Selangor later this year. Furthermore, he emphasized Malaysia's commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The Prime Minister expressed his optimism about these potential collaborations, emphasizing their potential to contribute to the well-being of Malaysians and the nation's development. The details regarding specific investment plans or timelines were not disclosed in the statement. With this meeting, Malaysia has shown its interest in attracting investments from innovative companies like Tesla and SpaceX, recognizing the potential benefits they could bring to the country's economy and technological advancement.
