Tesla Giga Shanghai has resumed 80% of its production since resuming operations two weeks ago, local officials say. Other companies that supply components to automakers have also restored production by 80-90%, which is good news for the entire industry.

Companies that made it to Shanghai's first “whitelist” have resumed more than 80% of their production. Key businesses such as Tesla are reported to be actively rolling out vehicles from production lines and continue to pick up the pace. The production facilities of major semiconductor manufacturers SMIC and Hua Hong Semiconductor actually support more than 90% of pre-lockdown level production, an official said Saturday, according to the Global Times.

Two weeks ago, Tesla returned 8,000 employees to its Shanghai plant, about half of the total. Prior to this, Giga Shanghai was closed for about three weeks due to the COVID-19 lockdown. All production in Shanghai, as in many other cities in China, was completely stopped. Tesla was one of 666 companies out of about 50,000 registered in Shanghai that were on the “whitelist.” The list includes mainly companies in the automotive, semiconductor, and energy industries.

In order to promote the resumption of work in key sectors in an orderly manner, Shanghai has compiled a second list of 1,188 companies, mainly in sectors such as integrated circuit manufacturing, automobile manufacturing, equipment manufacturing and biomedicine, said Zhang Hongtao, chief engineer of the Shanghai Economic and Information Technology Commission, during the press conference held in Shanghai on Saturday. The resumption of production at some of these companies will have a direct positive impact on the full recovery of production at Giga Shanghai.

China has introduced a whitelist approach to support the reopening of key companies and minimize the impact of COVID-19 on the supply chain. So far, Shanghai's whitelist allows a total of 1,854 companies to reopen.
