Tesla is looking for locations to open showrooms in three Indian cities to actively enter the country's market. The company has hired an executive to spearhead the lobbying and business efforts, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
In January, Tesla registered its Indian office Tesla Motors & Energy Pvt. Ltd. in the Karnataka capital, Bangalore, according to information from the Department of Corporate Affairs. The company has so far appointed three directors: Vaibhav Taneja, Venkatarangam Sriram, and David John Feinstein. Taneja is CFO at Tesla, while Feinstein is Global Trade Director at Tesla, Trade Market Access. The company intends to import and sell the Model 3 sedan by mid-2021.
It has now become known that Tesla is looking for three locations of commercial properties ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 square feet each to open showrooms and service centers. While it has previously been discussed that the company intends to open a store in Mumbai, the other two locations are new.
In mid-February, sources said Tesla had three rounds of talks with the Ministry for Industries and Mining Government of Maharashtra. The subject of negotiations was the opening of a showroom in Mumbai for the sale of cars. Now Reuters sources say the company is looking for a location in the capital, New Delhi, and the tech city of Bangalore in the south. The stores will reportedly be set up as centers of excellence where customers can get the full range of services from Tesla.
In addition, Tesla hired Manuj Khurana, a former executive of India's investment promotion body, Invest India. He will become the company's first major employee in the country to lead policy and business development efforts in India, as well as lead Tesla's entry into the country's market.
