In the spring of 2021, Tesla began offering its electricity rates to some Powerwall owners in Germany. Together with the construction of an automobile plant, the company is preparing for a large-scale entry into the German electricity market with its own equipment and software. Tesla and its partner, Octopus Energy, are reported to want to introduce a nationwide electricity tariff from October 18.
In September, TESMANIAN reported that Tesla Energy intends to offer its services to customers across the country no later than early 2022 with a nationwide rollout. Now Der Spiegel has announced that the American company and British startup Octopus Energy want to introduce a nationwide electricity tariff starting October 18. This proposal aims to create a clean, digitized energy system. “We will show regulators that this is already possible,” said Octopus CEO Andrew Mack. "So that something finally gets off the ground in the German electricity market."
Tesla and Octopus transfer their green power to customers at a purchase price, plus the base fee of the respective network operator and a monthly flat rate of €3. Such a proposal has already been tested in Baden-Württemberg since the end of March, and in Bavaria since mid-July. The tariff was originally reserved for owners of the solar system and Tesla Powerwall.
In the medium term, Tesla and Octopus Energy want to combine a lot of Powerwalls into virtual power plants. If there is a shortage of electricity in the control energy market, Tesla is allowed to feed some of the electricity from the Powerwalls into the public grid, and buyers receive a share of the income.
