Tesla electric vehicles have captured our hearts, and continue to attract more and more attention. In 2020, Tesla Model 3 became the best-selling EV for the third year in a row, and the new Model Y has already taken fourth place among all existing plug-in cars today.

2020 was truly a turning point: EVs continue to capture an increasing market share, while their gasoline competitors are gradually losing the love and attention of consumers.

December did not give us unexpected news, and, as before, Tesla Model 3 became the best-selling EV in the world, registering 65,109 units, according to EV-Sales. The Wuling Mini EV, a tiny and cheap Chinese car, reached a new record with 33,489 units, placing it in second place.

In December, VW ID.3 climbed to the podium for the first time with a record 28,108 registrations, and finished in third place. This unexpectedly high number could be attributed to compliance with EU CO2 emissions regulations. In the coming months, it will be possible to better assess its growth trend.

Renault Zoe came in fourth with 16,372 registrations. The new Tesla Model Y, sales of which only started in March 2020--and took place exclusively in North America--took fifth place with 16,055 registration. In 2021, the Model Y should bring us a lot of surprises as its sales in China just began, and will be launched in Germany and expanded in the US thanks to Giga Texas.

The global sales of 2020 have not brought anything unexpected either. The Tesla Model 3 is named the (unchanged) Best Seller of the Year for the third time in a row, registering 365,240 units. At the moment, there is not a single real competitor on the horizon, and Model 3 occupies 12% of the EV market share. The closest competitor is the Wuling Mini EV, which sold three times fewer cars and came in second with 119,255 registrations.

Renault Zoe ranked third with 100,431 sales in 2020. In fourth place, with 79,734 registrations, is Tesla Model Y, which has been holding this spot tightly for several months in a row. Hyundai Kona EV closes out the top five in 2020 with 65,075 sales.

Tesla has managed to win another monthly and annual Best Seller title. In 2020, the company sold a record 499,550, more than double the sales of its closest competitor Volkswagen, which registered 220,220 units. The California manufacturer is showing a strong upward trend in production, which means that in 2021, Tesla is once again likely to become the top-selling EV.
