Twitter will soon start freeing the namespace of 1.5 billion accounts, Elon Musk said. The move is aimed at releasing interesting handles that are already occupied but have not been used by the owners for several years.

New Twitter owner Elon Musk said in a series of tweets on Friday that the company will delete and free names of 1.5 billion accounts that have been inactive for years on the platform. “Twitter will soon start freeing the name space of 1.5 billion accounts,” he wrote. “These are obvious account deletions with no tweets & no log in for years,” Musk added.

It became a popular request after Musk bought Twitter. The problem is that during the existence of Twitter, a lot of interesting, fun and cool names (Twitter handles) have been chosen by different users. Over time, some accounts became inactive for various reasons, but these cool handles remained tied to those accounts and could no longer be used by other users. Some of the users simply lost interest in the platform and never wanted to return again, and others may have forgotten account credentials, losing access. Another category was accounts that were suspended by Twitter and users could no longer use them. According to Musk, Twitter has a base of 1.5 billion accounts that have been inactive for several years, which is obviously a lot.
