SpaceX operates the world's largest broadband constellation with approximately 3,580 Starlink satellites in Low Earth Orbit. This week, SpaceX announced that Starlink internet is now available across all of Brazil. The company shared a map which shows that there is Starlink coverage in remote regions, including the Amazon rainforest. The broadband service became available in portions of Brazil in May 2022, it was initially rolled out to schools located in rural communities. The company wrote in Portuguese on February 8 that customers can now order the service nationwide.

Last year, SpaceX founder Elon Musk personally met with former Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro to discuss how to use Starlink to connect the most remote Brazil regions where internet was nonexistent and how to use the network to monitor the Amazon rainforest against illegal fires and deforestation. “Super excited to be in Brazil for launch of Starlink for 19,000 unconnected schools in rural areas & environmental monitoring of Amazon! 🇧🇷 🌳 🛰 ♥️” tweeted Musk on May 20, 2022, as previously reported by TESMANIAN.  

By September 22, 2022, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell traveled to Brazil to visit a school in the Amazon region that got connected to Starlink. The school previously did not have access so it was very important for the teachers to have access to the internet in class in order to enhance the students’ education. “Education is the path out of poverty and Internet access enables education," said Musk last year; He video called Shotwell and the students to inaugurate the internet service in the classroom (read more in the story linked below).

The Polaris Program astronaut crew, led by Shift4 Payments founder Jared Isaacman, donated $500,000 USD to connect 100 schools in Brazil and Chile to Starlink internet in October 2022. “Increasing internet connectivity to communities around the world is one of the core tenets of Polaris Dawn, the first of the Polaris Program’s three human spaceflight missions. SpaceX is working with nonprofit organizations – Enseña Chile in Chile and MegaEdu in Brazil – to identify schools in each country in need of great internet. Starlinks are being delivered to schools in Chile throughout October, followed by Brazil in November [2022],” said Polaris Program representatives in a press release.
