As of today, SpaceX operates around 3,425 internet-beaming Starlink satellites in Low Earth Orbit that provide internet to over one million subscribers globally. The company has permission to launch 7,500 more Starlink satellites that will expand service coverage and build a robust internet network. Starlink is already active in some of Canada’s most remote places, including the Pikangikum First Nation rural communities located in the Sioux Lookout District of northwestern Ontario. The indigenous community of approximately 2,000 people was one of the first to be connected to Starlink in December 2020. The community was helped by FSET Information Technology, a Canadian company that provides a wide range of tech-related services in Kenora, Ontario. FSET reached out to SpaceX to purchase the Starlink kits and also hands-on installed the hardware at the indigenous communities.
