Elon Musk, CEOs of some oil and gas giants, the Prince of Norway, the President of Ukraine, and others will speak at the ONS 2022 Energy Conference to discuss the problems associated with the world's transition to renewable energy sources.
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is a clear supporter of renewable energy sources, making the main bet on solar energy. Realizing that the world will not be able to immediately switch to fully renewable energy sources, he also advocates for nuclear power. The importance of maintaining existing nuclear power plants and stopping their closures has been highlighted by Russia's attack on Ukraine. While Europe turned out to be almost completely dependent on Russian energy sources, it could reduce it by using its own nuclear energy. Under these conditions, shutting down nuclear power plants there is “total madness,” according to Musk.
The ONS Energy Conference, which takes place every two years, is the world's leading forum for discussions about energy, technology, and innovation. ONS is the place where leading international experts meet to discuss trends affecting the energy industry. ONS 2022 will be held from August 29 to September 1, 2022, and will feature many respected speakers who are top experts in their fields.
Elon Musk is one of the speakers at the conference and will speak at its opening, which is called “TRUST,” on August 29. Among other speakers opening the conference:
- H.R.H. Crown Prince Haakon of Norway
- Edward Daniels, Chair ONS Conference Committee
- Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine
- Jonas Gahr Støre, Prime Minister of Norway
- Leila Benali Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development of Morocco
- Fatih Birol, Executive Director, IEA
- Anders Opedal, President & CEO, Equinor
- Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman & CEO, Total Energies
- Helima Croft, Managing Director and Global Head Commodity Strategy, RBC Capital Markets
- Ann Mettler, VP, Breakthrough Energy Europe

“The world is facing a shortage of energy as the transition to sustainability and net zero is starting to get traction. In contrast to general wishes and political aspirations, the consumption of oil, gas and coal is still growing, while unrest also excludes more energy from the market,” the session description on the ONS website reads.
“To pass the tipping point and pick up pace in the energy transition, it is up to our industry to design, build and realize security of supply and a sustainable energy future. The gap between aspirations and reality must be solved.”
Musk last visited ONS in Stavanger in 2014. Then, he talked about what, at the time, most people did not even think about. Eight years have passed since then, and his predictions about the importance of solar energy, batteries, and the depletion of fossil resources have largely been confirmed, the ONS website noted.
