Tesla Giga Texas continues to receive equipment to produce 4680 battery cells, as the company plans to begin mass production in 2022. Battery modular production equipment was delivered to the third floor of the battery cell workshop at the beginning of this week.

Tesla's 4680 cells are one of the company's most important products, as they will reduce the cost of electric vehicles, improve their performance, and also contribute to even faster growth in the manufacturer's production capacity. Due to the difficulties that Tesla faced in 2020, the company has not yet been able to achieve mass production. During the Earnings Call for Q2 2021, Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared some details:

"Right now, we have a challenge with basically what's called calendaring, or basically squashing the cathode, with material to a particular height. So it just goes through these rollers and gets squashed like pizza dough, basically. And - but very hard pizza dough. And then - it's causing - it's denting the calendar rolls. This is not something that happened when the calendar rolls were smaller, but it is happening when the calendar rolls are bigger. So it's just like - we were like, okay, we weren't expecting that."

Because of this, there have been some delays, although Tesla has already ordered and continues to receive equipment for large-scale production of cells in Austin and Berlin, according to Musk. But given what the company learned at the Fremont pilot plant, they will have to make some modifications.

Recently, Giga Texas construction progress observer Joe Tegtmeyer/Twitter shared photos of trucks delivering containers with equipment to the factory's battery workshop. It has been loaded to the third floor of the building where it will be installed and configured for future production.

Delays in mass production of 4680 cells may have worried some investors, but the shipment of this equipment to Giga Texas could indicate Tesla's steady progress. Since the equipment has been supplied to Giga Texas for several months now, this also means that the manufacturer is actively preparing to launch mass production of its battery cells.
