Tesla may soon release a major Autopilot update in China, according to rumors. There are indications that this could be the introduction of Tesla Vision to the local market.

Rumors have recently surfaced that Tesla will soon roll out an Autopilot update in China. Chris Zheng/Twitter, who is an influencer in China, said via his Weibo account, which has over 500,000 followers, “Tesla China will soon release a major update to Autopilot.” He posted on Twitter that Tesla China has been internally testing Tesla Vision Park Assist for several months. He said that this feature will soon be rolled out to Chinese owners.

Tesla's Autopilot software is considered mediocre in China, which is why the rumor has attracted the attention of hundreds of thousands of the company’s car owners there. Although no additional information has been mentioned, some assumptions can be made based on the information that already exists.

In 2021, Tesla began the transition to Tesla Vision. Cars equipped with it use only the “vision” from cameras to drive on Autopilot. The company removed ultrasonic radars (USS) from Model 3 and Model Y, and then from Model S and Model X in 2022. With a 360-degree field of view, the system has powerful image processing capabilities and can detect obstacles up to 250 meters away.

Today, in most parts of the world, Model 3 and Model Y are already based on the Tesla Vision solution. However, both models currently sold by Tesla in China are still equipped with USS. Earlier in March, regulatory filings revealed that Tesla had announced a Model Y without radar in China. This could mean the compact SUV could be the first Tesla model without radar in China. Thus, the information that Zheng reported may refer to this.
