Tesla is opening up its unique EV charger connector design to other automakers, encouraging North American vehicles to be built with the new NACS charging standard. Since most of the charging stations in the region are owned by Tesla, this will encourage the wider adoption of EVs. Tesla will soon open its Superchargers in North America to all EVs.
Tesla has the widest network of charging stations in North America and worldwide. With over 10 years of experience with their Superchargers that have 20 billion EV charging miles, Tesla has the most proven charging connector of any automaker in their vehicles. It provides charging offering AC charging and up to 1 MW DC charging in one slim package. The Tesla connector has no moving parts, is half the size of others and twice as powerful as Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors.
True to its mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy, Tesla announced on Friday that it is opening its electric vehicle connector design to the world. The company has invited charging network operators and vehicle manufacturers to install the Tesla charging connector and charging port, now called the North American Charging Standard (NACS), on their equipment and vehicles.
Today, NACS is the most common charging standard in North America, and the number of electric vehicles with NACS outnumbers CCS by more than twice, and Tesla's Supercharging network has 60% more NACS posts than all the CCS-equipped networks combined.
Tesla said network operators already have plans to include NACS with their chargers, meaning Tesla owners can expect to charge on other networks without the need for bulky adapters. The company said it is looking forward to future electric vehicles incorporating the NACS design as they gain access to charging on Tesla's Supercharging and Destination Charging networks in North America.
The manufacturer explained that since NACS is a purely electrical and mechanical interface, agnostic to use case and communication protocol, it is easy to implement. Tesla said design and specification files are available for download while actively working with relevant standards bodies to codify Tesla’s charging connector as a public standard.
