Tesla began delivering Model Y in Japan, bringing joy to its customers. After months of waiting, the Japanese are now able to order and receive the car that is on track to become the best-selling car in the world.
At the end of August, hundreds of Tesla Model Ys arrived in Japan on two ships. This is the first batch of cars that arrived in the country from the very beginning of their mass production. On September 9, Tesla Japan announced that it had delivered the first Model Ys to customers, and a gala event was organized in honor of it. The exact number of cars that arrived is unknown, though we will know the final results for September in early October.
Tesla had planned to enter the Japanese market earlier, but due to a production halt at Giga Shanghai in April due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the plan had to be postponed. Thanks to the tireless and dedicated work of the Tesla China team, the factory has resumed production to continue working at an even more active pace. The company planned to upgrade its production facilities and was confident that it would successfully cope with this, so opened the possibility of ordering Model Y for Japan, Australia, Singapore, and New Zealand in early June.
The modernization, which took place throughout July and early August, significantly increased production, and in August, dozens of ships loaded with Tesla cars left the Shanghai port. The first ship for Japan arrived at the end of August, so deliveries did not begin until September.
In Japan, Tesla only offers the base Model Y and Performance. The first deliveries consisted entirely of the base Model Y, while Performance deliveries were scheduled towards the end of the year.
