Tesla Will 'Try a Little Advertising,' Says Elon Musk

Tesla will try some advertising to see if it does any good, Elon Musk said. The move came in response to a shareholder request that the company start advertising.

Elon Musk said Tesla “will try a little advertising and see how it goes” during the Annual Shareholders Meeting, which was held May 16 at Giga Texas. He was responding to a shareholder who asked about advertising. The reasoning was that Tesla cars have a lot of great features that no one but car owners know about, and the company should tell consumers more about them.

“There are amazing features and functionalities in Teslas that people just don't know about. And although there's obviously a lot of people that follow the Tesla account, you know, my account, on Twitter, to some degree, it's already preaching to the choir and the choir is already convinced,” Musk said.

Previously, many Tesla shareholders had asked the company to start advertising its products. Some of them felt it was necessary to increase demand. Others see the benefit of advertising because it can dispel various negative myths created by opponents of the company and its success.

Given investors' long-standing requests, Musk has taken them into account, so he is willing to try out advertising for Tesla. “So, I think what you're saying does have some merit. And, you know what, I believe in taking suggestions, so we'll try a little advertising and see how it goes,” he said.

Now Musk is not just Tesla's CEO, with the company's conviction that it does not need advertising. Now, he also owns Twitter, which depends on advertisers. Given the new circumstances, Musk has changed his view of advertising, and will probably try it out on Twitter.

In recent months, Tesla has stepped up its efforts to produce introductory videos. The company publishes them on its Twitter and YouTube accounts. They include both an introduction to the functionality of the company's products and their technical aspects. Nevertheless, Tesla has never promoted itself in traditional ways, on TV, in publications, or via advertising platforms.
