Mobile users of social media platform Twitter can now add Ethereum (ETH) addresses to the list of options for potential tips. Now, users who are grateful for the content will be able to reward their favorite accounts not only in Bitcoin but also in Ethereum.

Twitter announced that users will now be able to receive potential tips in ETH on Wednesday, February 16. The move comes just months after the social network officially launched Bitcoin tipping via the Lightning network on mobile devices.

Tip Jar originally allowed Twitter users to add Bandcamp, Cash App, Patreon, PayPal, and Venmo links to their Twitter profile. The addition of Bitcoin tipping follows right after former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey told investors in July 2021 that Bitcoin will be a “big part” of the platform's future. He stated that Bitcoin could help the company move faster in terms of expanding its products, and also explained that it is the best candidate to be the native currency of the Internet.

“If the Internet has a native currency, a global currency, we are able to move so much faster with products such as Super Follows, Commerce, Subscriptions, Tip Jar, and we can reach every single person on the planet because of that instead of going down a market-by-market-by-market approach,” Dorsey explained. “I think this is a big part of our future. I think there is a lot of innovation above just currency to be had, especially as we think about decentralizing social media more and providing more economic incentive. So I think it’s hugely important to Twitter and to Twitter shareholders that we continue to look at the space and invest aggressively in it,” he added. This was the first time Dorsey spoke publicly about how Twitter could integrate Bitcoin into its product line.

The newest feature represents a deepening connection between the popular social media platform and cryptocurrency. Last month, Twitter also gave users of its Blue subscription service the ability to verify non-fungible token (NFT) profile pictures.
