Elon Musk met with the EU industry chief to discuss the Digital Services Act policies under which Twitter should operate. The platform owner stated that the EU's goals of transparency, accountability, and accuracy of information are aligned with those of Twitter.

European Union industry chief Thierry Breton held a video call on Tuesday with new Twitter owner Elon Musk to discuss two key EU technology initiatives, a European Commission official said. The meeting came amid concerns from the EU that the platform might not meet their requirements.

Two months ago, Breton and Musk had a video call during which the industry chief told the owner of Twitter that there was still a lot of work ahead to enforce transparent usage policies, significantly increase content moderation, and protect free speech. These obligations are set out in the EU's Digital Services Act, which came into force in November 2022. It is aimed at online platforms.

“The call is to discuss Twitter's implementation of the Digital Services Act and its implementation of the Code of Practice on disinformation,” the official said.

After the call, Musk tweeted that he had a good meeting with Breton. He indicated that the EU's goals of transparency, accountability, and accuracy of information are aligned with the platform's, adding that CommunityNotes will be transformational for the latter.

Breton also tweeted that he had a constructive conversation with Musk. He said he took note of the path Twitter is seeking to comply with DSA rules in Europe. He also noted that the next few months will play a decisive role in how the commitments will be fulfilled.
