According to Lee's vision, a holding company named "X" would be the parent company for Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and Boring Company. X's mission is to ensure human survival and progress.
Tesla - accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy
SpaceX - make space-faring civilization
The Boring Co - end traffic
Neuralink - protect humanity from general AI
Good idea— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) December 23, 2020
Lee explains that this idea is rather a move to create a structure that allows Musk to continue to make big bets for humanity, and have time to manage them. The mission of X company is a big idea, big enough to hold all of Musk's ideas and ventures for his lifetime. The proposed name "X" is mainly because he already owns the domain name http://x.com, which is a decent name, Lee explains.
In July 2017, Musk bought the domain name that he owned back in 1999. He owned X.com when it served as home to his financial services startup, which was eventually merged with another company called Confinity in a deal that would be rebranded as PayPal in 2001.
Thanks PayPal for allowing me to buy back https://t.co/bOUOejO16Y! No plans right now, but it has great sentimental value to me.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 11, 2017
