Final environmental approval for Tesla's Giga Berlin could be obtained before the end of the year, according to Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor and Energy Jörg Steinbach.

"When the approval for the entire project comes, is closely related to the development plan procedure. Both should be signed and sealed in mid-December," Steinbach told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

The minister believes that, in the next ten years, Giga Berlin can employ up to 40 thousand people, depending on the market situation. "In perspective, the Tesla factory in Grünheide could - depending on the market ramp-up - have up to 40,000 employees," he said.

Initially, Tesla plans to employ about 12,000 employees in manufacturing and administration. According to the German state government, requirement profiles are available for the first 6,000 positions.

"We will not be able to meet the need for skilled workers from Brandenburg alone," said Steinbach. Brandenburg could benefit from job cuts in the automotive industry in other federal states. "There is now the unique chance that these people will not end up unemployed, but can continue to work in a growth market," he added.

Tesla plans to start production in mid-2021, though the pace of Giga Berlin construction hints that this could happen even sooner. Tesla is expected to receive its last green light by the end of the year, but for now, the company is building with prior approvals.
