Ohio's Clinton Township Police Department goes electric with two Tesla Model Ys and one Model 3. The new purchase will not only save thousands of taxpayer dollars annually but also reduce the city's carbon footprint.

Clinton Township, Ohio, made an excellent purchase that was an investment in the future of the city and the planet. The two Tesla Model Ys were bought by Police Chief Mike Jones, who was looking for ways to save on fuel and maintenance for his fleet of police cruisers, Drive Tesla Canada reported.

Before buying, Jones did some research to see how much he could actually save by using Tesla vehicles. In addition, he turned to Chief of Police at Bargersville Police Department, Todd Bertram, who already has experience with Tesla cars, since his PD became the first Indiana police department with a Tesla electric car and the first in the country with a Tesla Model 3. The main motivation for the purchase was savings.

According to Jones' analysis, the Model Y costs about $14,000 more than the Ford Explorer, however, taking into account the total refueling/charging and maintenance costs, this additional initial cost will be recouped in just three years. The city expects to spend just $875 on electricity charges for the Model Y, compared to $4,000 on fuel for the Ford Explorer. Electric vehicle maintenance costs are expected to be just $40 per year, compared to $900 for the Explorer.

Tthe two Model Ys were fitted with police equipment from Parr Public Safety Equipment. The company has shared photos on its Facebook page as well as video on TikTok.

In addition to Model Y, Clinton Township also bought Model 3 for their code compliance officer. This will bring even more savings to the city and reduce CO2 emissions. Township trustee Jane Cera said the investment in the three Teslas is worth it for the residents of the township, and the planet.

“I am delighted about this decision to begin electrifying our fleet. We will be saving our residents significant costs with these e-vehicles, doing what’s necessary for our climate, and continuing to demonstrate our commitment to sustainability.”
