Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has launched the first battery-powered storage pilot project in collaboration with Al Attiyah Group and Tesla.

Kahramaa has installed a 1 MW/4 MWh storage system at its 11kV Nuaija station and is under the control of the Distribution Control Center, reported World Energy Trade.

The facility built in collaboration with Qatar-based conglomerate Al Attiyah Group and American electric vehicle manufacturer and battery supplier Tesla is intended to store power during peak hours or when the station reaches maximum load, as well as to improve network voltage.

The $2.7 million project was completed in one year, with the Al Attiyah group of companies responsible for installing the storage systems and Tesla for supplying the batteries.

Kahramaa was able to complete the project ahead of schedule. This allows the energy company to begin capitalizing on this massive upgrade in the summer months, one of the highest energy consumption periods for the State of Qatar.

The project uses Tesla Powerpack batteries. Each Powerpack is a storage device with a capacity of 232 kW, containing 16 individual battery pods, a thermal control system, and hundreds of sensors that monitor and report on cell-level performance.

Kahramaa is proud to have its young Qatari employees lead the project through all phases, from design and planning to implementation and operation. The team managed to overcome many of the challenges it faced during implementation, the most important of which is managing and training staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.
