The leadership of a Tesla technology partner in China that is helping to develop a "one million mile" battery says the company is now "ready to produce." CATL said it had developed a battery that runs over a million miles, and the battery will last for 16 years.

The Chinese giant, who has a two-year contract with Tesla, is ready to release a battery that lasts 16 years and 1.24 million miles. Extending the life of batteries for electric cars is now a key moment, because it will reduce the cost of owning a car.

"If someone places an order, we are ready to produce," Zeng said in an interview with the South China Morning Post (SCMP), declining to elaborate on contracts. According to him, it will cost about 10% more than the cost of current batteries.

In February, CATL entered into a two-year supply contract for Tesla batteries. CATL batteries are designed for Model 3 sedans, manufactured at the new Tesla Giga Shanghai factory. Batteries are the most expensive component of an electric vehicle, so the ability to use your vehicle for longer or resell it profitably is the key.

The creation of a new generation of battery technology for consumer electric vehicles has long bothered Tesla CEO Elon Musk. And judging by the way he describes the upcoming Battery Day, Tesla is ready to reveal amazing information to the world about its achievements in this area. It will be "one of the most exciting days in Tesla's history," Musk said during the Q1 2020 earnings call.

Zeng said that he constantly communicates with Musk through messages. Thus, he shares with him his thoughts on the development of technology and business. According to Zeng, CATL is strengthening its relationship with Tesla, and their agenda includes issues such as the use of cobalt batteries.

“We’re getting along well and he [Musk] is a fun guy ... He’s talking about cost all day long, and I’m making sure we have the solutions.”
