Tesla battery supplier CATL is considering building a new $5 billion manufacturing facility. The manufacturer is reportedly considering sites in Mexico, the US, or Canada.

Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), the world's largest electric vehicle battery maker, is considering sites in North America to build a massive $5 billion plant that will supply customers including Tesla, Bloomberg reports, citing people familiar with the matter. According to sources, CATL intends to build a plant capable of producing up to 80 gigawatt-hours of batteries per year. It is planned that up to 10,000 workers will eventually be employed at the facility.

CATL representatives visited Mexico earlier this month and held several meetings, the sources said. The company's representatives are also considering sites in the US and Canada, but they are concerned about the availability of labor there and some other trade issues.

CATL continues its rapid development as electric vehicles become more and more popular. A manufacturing presence in North America will be critical to avoid costly sales tariffs for deliveries to its main customer, Tesla, as well as to other US EV manufacturers.
