Tesla continues to build virtual power plants, consisting of Powerwalls, around the world and has now built one in Japan. The virtual power plant composed of “Miyakojima VPP” has become one of the largest in the country.

Virtual power plants (VPPs) are an integral part of a stable electrical network of various energy sources and continue to grow in popularity. In addition to stabilizing the grid, they create the prerequisites for the integration of renewable energy sources into the markets. Tesla produces solar panels for generating electricity and Powerwalls for its accumulation, and also offers some of its customers in some countries to become a member of the VPP. The company has such in Australia and the US and has now announced its establishment in Japan.

In Miyakojima, Okinawa Prefecture, a VPP project using a Tesla Powerwall home battery started in 2021, the manufacturer said. It has more than 300 units installed on the island. This marked the first commercial use of the Powerwall for a VPP project in Japan and became the largest commercial VPP using household batteries in the country.

This project is based on the “Solar Panel + Battery Installation Service” provided by Miyakojima Mirai Energy Co., Ltd., which allows you to install the system with zero initial installation cost. Powerwall aggregation uses Tesla software to manage optimal mass charging and discharging. The use of such systems brings obvious benefits to the households themselves and stabilizes the grid of Miyako Island.

This project began in 2021 and is scheduled to have 400 Powerwall units installed on the island by the end of FY 2022. However, the company's plans are even more ambitious. By the end of the fiscal year 2023, 600 units will be installed, and after 2024, Powerwall is planned to be installed throughout Okinawa Prefecture.
