Tesla FSD Beta is the company's latest development that will eventually lead to full self-driving, which could happen as early as the end of this year. To date, over 100,000 program members are helping the manufacturer improve it.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk expects that Level 4 autonomy could be achieved by the company as early as this year. During the Q4 2021 Earnings Call, Musk said that the company strives not simply to be better than a human, as this is too low a standard. People are often distracted, tired or subject to various emotions. Therefore, Tesla strives for higher standards, which requires long and painstaking work.
"So actually being better than a human, I think, is relatively very forward, frankly, how do you be 1,000% better or 10,000% better. Yes. That's what gets much harder."
Tesla reported in the Q4 2021 report that nearly 60,000 vehicles in the US are using FSD Beta. The company is constantly making improvements to it, which has resulted in the number of interventions per mile dropping lower and lower, while the rate of improvement is higher.
"But I think anyone who's been in the FSD Beta program, I mean if they were just to plot the progress of the beta interventions per mile, it's obviously trending to a very small number of interventions per mile and pace of improvement is fast. And there are several profound improvements to the FSD stack that are coming in the next few months. So, yes. I would be shocked if we do not achieve Full Self-Driving safer than human this year. I would be shocked."
In a recent interview with Chris Anderson, who hosted TED 2022, the head of Tesla said that as of April, the company has over 100,000 FSD beta testers. This reflects an increase of almost 67% compared to the number announced in January. This expansion of the beta program indicates the manufacturer's growing confidence in the product and its safety.
“The car currently drives me around Austin most of the time with no interventions...and we have over 100,000 people in our full self-driving beta program,” Musk said.
Tesla has already begun expanding its FSD Beta testing program in Canada and is expected to start testing on European roads this year. Full self-driving is a highly anticipated and desirable technology, so we are watching its development with great interest.
