Tesla Giga Berlin could have already received BYD batteries according to information from Chinese media. Sources say that the production of cars with new battery cells will begin at the end of August or at the beginning of September.
According to Chinese media publication Sina Tech, citing several people familiar with the matter, BYD blade batteries have begun shipping to Tesla's plant in Germany. Giga Berlin will be the first factory to use the new batteries, and deliveries to the manufacturer's other facilities are not yet expected. After the first delivery, it is expected that production with them will begin somewhere in one month, which means in late August to early September.
After a long period of rumors and speculation, in early June BYD executive told state media that the company was ready to start shipping its Tesla batteries. “We are good friends with Elon Musk and we are preparing to supply batteries to Tesla,” BYD’s executive vice president Lian Yu-bo said in the short video clip with state television broadcaster CGTN. This was the first official confirmation of the rumors that appeared about a year ago. However, the video was later removed, which added further confusion to the story.
Today it is difficult to say for sure what exactly is happening. Perhaps in a month's time, when the alleged Model Y with BYD batteries rolls off the assembly line, we may hear an official statement from both companies.
