Tesla has signed a contract to supply water to Giga Berlin, marking the next major milestone in the company's journey towards realizing its plans.

Tesla has overcome an important hurdle to establish its Grunheide factory near Berlin. The company has signed a contract to develop the water resources, said Sandra Ponesky, spokeswoman for the Strausberg-Erkner Waters Association in Potsdam. She is referring to water supply and wastewater disposal for Phase 1 of Giga Berlin, Automobilwoche reports.

Tesla has cut its forecast for water consumption at its peak from 3.3 million to 1.4 million cubic meters per year. The contract specifies the development costs and routes of the pipelines. The Strausberg-Erkner Waters Association (WSE) has already approved an application for the development of the Gigafactory.

In September, the WSE said that, as Tesla cut water consumption, the supply and disposal of Tesla's plant with water in the first phase of expansion will be ensured.

“With the decision that has now been made, the supply and disposal of the Tesla factory in the first expansion stage with the quantities requested from the approval process and the currently available resources of the WSE is ensured. This is possible because Tesla has reduced the requirement in the current permit application and the authorities have approved additional withdrawal quantities."

According to the plan, Tesla wants to start producing electric vehicles in mid-2021. Employment agencies in Brandenburg are already actively recruiting staff, which, at the first stage, should be up to 12,000 employees.
