Tesla Giga Mexico Could Get Water Supply from New 60-Mile Water Pipeline

Tesla Giga Mexico could get its water supply from a new 60-mile water pipeline due to be completed this year. In addition, the company has several highly efficient solutions for maximum water savings in production.

Tesla chose Nuevo León, Mexico as the site for the new Gigafactory. This decision was made due to the fact that the state borders the United States, which has many important advantages. Giga Texas is only a few hours away, which was the decisive factor for building a factory there.

In addition to a favorable location, which is necessary for the success of the factory, Tesla will also face difficulties in the area. There is a tense situation with water supply in the region, which even put the producer's location in doubt at first. However, both Tesla and the state already have solutions in place to overcome this hurdle.

Last year, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and Nuevo León Governor Samuel Garcia proposed the 10 billion pesos ($525 million) El Cuchillo II Aqueduct to address the state's water crisis. It is a 60-mile pipeline that should be completed this year, according to BNamericas. It will have a diameter of 84 inches and will have five pumping stations. It will also be the second line to bring water to the state capital from Cuchillo Dam. In addition, the aqueduct may supply water to Giga Mexico, although there is no information on this.

“This new aqueduct will double the water supply that the El Cuchillo system currently has,” said Manuel Salas Flores, CEO of Mexican water engineering firm Cipro.

“It is undoubtedly one of the most important projects that we're developing in the country. It's a large aqueduct to build, which is also being carried out in record time,” he added.


Salas Flores believes that regardless of the source of water supply, Tesla's strategy will focus on its own water efficiency. He believes the manufacturer's plan is likely to include three familiar water solutions. One of them involves the use of reused water, treated water or treated wastewater. The second suggests that Tesla is looking to optimize all vehicle manufacturing processes to minimize water use. The third assumes that the company will recycle all the water it uses.

“We know these types of solutions very well in Mexico,” said Salas Flores. “What can be expected is that they will be highly sophisticated and allow [Tesla] to maximize the uses that they give to the water,” he said.
