Tesla is looking for an employee for an important position in Canada. An experienced specialist will take the position of Senior Policy Associate, Critical Minerals and Supply Chain in the country to further advance the company's policies, products, and logistics, including battery supplies.

Tesla is seeking an experienced Senior Policy Associate in Canada to work on a variety of matters related to light- and heavy-duty vehicle regulation in addition to a particular focus on global battery minerals and responsible sourcing policy, the manufacturer wrote on its website. The company explained that in this position, a successful candidate must oversee the development of public policy related to battery supply chains and sustainable energy, in addition to electric and autonomous vehicles, while serving at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels of government. In addition, the employee should keep the Tesla team informed of new rules or changes to old ones and ensure compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and legal requirements in designated jurisdictions.

In this role, the candidate will also provide strategic advice on policy development related to automotive industry regulations in Canada, as well as battery materials and supplier policies in North America and worldwide, Tesla said. This may indicate that the company may have a plan to ship battery materials from, to, or across Canada.

In late March, sources from Bloomberg revealed that Tesla had made a secret deal with Canadian nickel miner Vale SA. At the moment, none of the companies has confirmed nor denied this information. Canada has large naturally occurring nickel reserves and an environmental and sustainable management advantage over many other mining markets, making it a great place for Tesla to expand.

The position is offered in Toronto, Ontario and only appeared on the website a few days ago. Requirements:

• Excellent understanding of Canadian legislative and regulatory processes at the federal and provincial levels.
• Experience in industry or government related to critical minerals strategy, battery supply chain management and/or responsible sourcing.
• 4+ years of policy development or advocacy experience aligned with Tesla’s mission in the public, private or not-for-profit sectors.
• Capacity to learn quickly to support other Tesla priorities including electric vehicle adoption, autonomous vehicles, emission regulation and renewable energy.
• Ability to prioritize multiple projects and adhere to business-critical deadlines.
• Capacity to work effectively and productively outside of an office environment.
• Ability to develop collaborative relationships and act as a well-respected, trusted partner that others want to work with.
• Exceptional writing and presentation skills are required.

As of today, Tesla is actively expanding its presence in Canada. In 2019, the company acquired Hibar Systems Ltd. in Richmond Hill, Ontario, which specializes in battery manufacturing. In addition, Tesla is in collaboration with Jeff Dahn's Canadian lab at Dalhousie University. Also, in 2021, the company opened production in Markham. The main direction of the new facility is the production of machines that will produce batteries in the company's factories around the world. In addition, the company will carry out R&D related to battery production. The facility will play a very important role in the development of the company, as Tesla's efforts are now aimed at establishing mass production of 4680 battery cells.
