Recently photographed bodies in white (BIW) Model Ys at Tesla's factory near Berlin showed an unusual body primer color, hinting at the emergence of new colors. This observation comes against the backdrop of a recently published shot of possible colors for the made-in-Berlin Model Y, published by a recruiter at the company's factory in Germany.
@gigafactory_4/Twitter managed to photograph 8 BIWs, located on the territory of Giga Berlin. An unusual observation is that one of the cars has a very interesting color. From the slightly opened cover, it can be seen that the body color is golden khaki, although color perception may depend on the color rendering of the screen.
That this is the final body color is unlikely, as, if it had been a car painted in a new paint shop, it would probably have remained there as a sample or would have been scrapped if not needed.
More realistically, this is a primer applied to the body in order to paint it in a new paint shop, built at Giga Berlin, in a new color. The fact is that usually, automakers choose white, gray, or black as an under-paint primer. For a better and deeper paint job, manufacturers use a primer in a color similar to the intended color of the car. Thus, such a primer color may additionally hint at a new color of paint that will be released by Tesla for cars produced at Giga Berlin.
In mid-February, Recruiter Gigafactory at Tesla Lydia van de Laar posted on Linkedin a photo that appears to show paint samples for cars that will roll off the Giga Berlin assembly line. Although this post was later deleted, Tesmanian retained the photo that she posted.
Close up on the photo we can see the sample painted in khaki color. This is a completely new color for Tesla and it seems to be getting a lot of attention. The most remarkable fact is that to paint a car this color, it is quite possible that a primer of the same color as in the photo taken in the territory of Giga Berlin yesterday can be used.
Earlier, in the spring of 2020, Musk also talked in more detail about the Paint Shop in Giga Berlin and about the properties of colors:
“Something interesting that I’m pretty excited about: the Berlin paint shop is going to have another opportunity for another 3 layers of paint. In order to get dimension on paint, you really need multiple layers. We’re going to do this in Berlin for the first time.”
Giga Berlin's upgraded Paint Shop adds several layers of paint for a unique look, which is almost impossible with traditional painting methods.
“If you get dimension, there’s something called flop, where you see the change in color with curvature.
“If you can do something like lay down a gloss layer, then lay down a layer with color tint, then lay down another gloss layer, you can get kind of a 3D feeling to the paint. It just pops. It's so much better than anything else."
