In March 2021, Tesla achieved significant success in the Chinese market by producing and delivering a record high number of vehicles. The company also reached another milestone, as its Model 3 became the best-selling midsize sedan in China of all vehicle types sold in the segment.
Last week, the CPCA (China Auto Industry Body) reported that Tesla sold in China 35,478 units of its electric vehicles produced at Gigafactory Shanghai in March 2021. This is in line with an impressive 94% growth over February sales, as well as a 207% increase over March 2020.
The data showed Model 3 sales in March reached 25,327, an 85% increase over the prior month. This high sales volume allowed Tesla to achieve another milestone: Model 3 became China's best-selling midsize sedan of all new vehicles registered in the world's largest automotive market.
In second place is Volkswagen Magotan, which registered more than 4,000 fewer units, with 20,964 vehicles. Third place belongs to one of the most popular cars in the whole world—the Honda Accord—with 19,340 units sold. Sales of other midsize sedans look even more modest compared to Model 3. The BMW 3 Series came in fourth place with 17,387 registrations. Closing out the Top 5 was Audi A4L with 15,068 cars sold.
