Tesla Model Y took first place in Spain, becoming the best-selling electric vehicle in the country in the first five months of 2023. Model 3 was the top-selling EV in May and the fourth best-selling EV through that month.

Tesla Model Y has become the top choice for many Europeans. Spain is now one of the countries where consumers have welcomed the electric SUV with particular affection. Based on the results of the first five months of 2023, Model Y became the best-selling electric vehicle. According to the data, 2,406 units were sold during this time, more than 1,000 more than the sales of the nearest competitor. This difference underscores the Spanish preference for the American-made cars, especially since their prices were significantly lowered in the first quarter of the year.

Tesla Model 3 became the best-selling EV in May with 578 sales, even surpassing its sibling Model Y. From January to May, Model 3 became the fourth best-selling EV in Spain.

Such a high sales result for Model Y became possible due to the fact that cars are now produced in Europe. Giga Berlin produces over 5,000 Model Ys a week, flooding the European market. In addition, the proximity of the factory allows the company to deliver cars very quickly. Therefore, sales can occur gradually, throughout all months, regardless of whether it is the beginning of the quarter or the end. Previously, when cars were only shipped from China or the US, deliveries typically came in the second half of each quarter.

The second best-selling electric car in Spain from January to May was the British MG MG4, with 1,400 units sold. Slightly behind, Fiat 500E is in third place with 1,117 units sold. Tesla Model 3 is in fourth place with 992 sales. Closing out the top five is Citroen E-C4 with 901 sales.

In the first five months of 2023, Tesla, which sells just four car models, captured 16.1% of the electric car market share in Spain. The leader at the moment is Stellantis, a corporation with 14 different brands, with a 26.3% share of the electric vehicle market.
