Tesla Model Y continues to dominate the Chinese EV SUV market. Despite the fact that most of the cars were produced by Giga Shanghai for export, the compact SUV still became the top-selling high-end EV SUV in the country in January 2021.
The popularity of Tesla Model Y has long been beyond doubt. The manufacturer is gradually increasing production of the compact SUV as it is in incredibly high demand worldwide and China is no exception. At the end of almost every month, hundreds of videos appear on social media showing long queues, mostly made up of Model Y, awaiting registration.
@DKurac/Twitter, referring to CATARC data, shared information about sales of premium SUVs in China in January. According to the data presented, Tesla Model Y became the best-selling vehicle in this category with 16,496 vehicle registrations. In second place is Lixiang ONE with 12,426 registrations. The car lagged behind Model Y by a whopping 4,070 units, yet is the only real competitor in the category in the Chinese market. In third place is NIO ES6 with 5,525 registrations. Fourth place belongs to NIO EC6 with 2,986 registrations. Closing out the top is 5 BMW iX3 with 1,914 registrations.

As can be seen from the results, Tesla is the most active manufacturer in the electric SUV category. The manufacturer sold 19,346 units in the Chinese market in January, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), where Model Y was given clear priority. Of the 19,346 units, 16,496 were Model Y and only 2,850 were Model 3.
