Tesla Model Y Earns 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has just announced that the 2021-2022 Tesla Model Y earns a TOP SAFETY PICK + Award, which is awarded only to the vehicles with the best performance in their ratings.

IIHS is an independent, non-profit research and educational organization dedicated to reducing loss—death, injury, and property damage—from car accidents. The cars with the best results in the IIHS scores are eligible for the TOP SAFETY PICK, awarded since model year 2006, or TOP SAFETY PICK +, which was unveiled in 2013. These awards identify the best vehicle choices for safety within size categories during a given year. According to just released data, 2021-2022 Tesla Model Y earns a TOP SAFETY PICK + Award in the mid-size SUV's standard.

After Tesla switched its vehicles to a camera-only system in the spring of 2021, IIHS said the mid-size SUV’s standard front crash prevention system earned superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian tests. The new award only confirms the highest level of safety of Model Y.

With 50% of traffic fatalities occurring at nighttime, when there is far less traffic, the risk for a traffic fatality is far greater at night than in the daytime. This led the IIHS to its most significant change for testing: vehicles must have headlights standard across every trim level that rank "Good" or "Acceptable." The "plus" is awarded to models that come exclusively with good or acceptable headlights, making it easier for consumers to find properly equipped vehicles.
