A Tesla Model Y with manufacturer's license plates and a LiDAR retrofit has been spotted in Canada. Additional equipment was used to calibrate existing Tesla equipment for autonomous driving, as had been done several times before.

For autopilot and full self-driving (FSD), Tesla vehicles only use cameras and have ditched radar by switching to Tesla Vision. Virtually all of the company's vehicles on the road are constantly collecting information, which is then used to train the entire fleet using a supercomputer developed by the company. In this way, all Tesla vehicles become "smarter" and better oriented in various situations.

The constant transition to new technologies and the desire for their safe use also go hand in hand with the constant monitoring of their proper functioning. Over the past few years, Tesla has used LiDAR on its vehicles several times. This was done in order to check the results obtained from standard cameras installed on cars and, if necessary, then calibrate them. These tests took place in the United States in 2016, 2017, 2020, and possibly at other times and countries, but they were not noticed.

Now, Tesla Model Y, with LiDAR equipment installed, has been spotted in Canada by Kenny Thach, who provided these photos to Drive Tesla. The car was outfitted with equipment that looks like the Luminar Hydra LIDAR. This may indicate that the company has begun control checking the operation of the cameras in order to understand whether they receive information similar to the sensors. This is also a good sign ahead of the launch of FSD Beta in Canada, which could take place in the coming days.
