Tesla Model Y was the best-selling premium SUV in China in August. The car has been the undisputed leader throughout the year and so far holds the title of the best-selling premium SUV in China in 2022.

Tesla delivered 76,965 vehicles from its Giga Shanghai last month, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Of these, 42,463 Model 3s and Model Ys were exported and 34,502 vehicles were delivered domestically. In August, shipments are distributed between overseas markets and China, and the bulk of sales in the country this quarter will be recorded in September.

According to the data, Tesla delivered 31,112 Model Ys in China, up 168.76% from 11,576 units in August 2021 and 307.23% from 7,640 units in July 2022. This once again makes Model Y the best-selling premium SUV in China and proves that Tesla vehicles are indeed capturing the lion's share of the market, especially when compared to the competition.

With more than half as many sales, Mercedes-Benz GLC came in second with 14,557 units. The gap with Model Y is huge and highlights that Chinese consumers have already made an informed choice in favor of an electric vehicle that offers the best comfort, performance, and price in the premium SUV segment. Audi Q5 came in third with 13,792 units sold, not far behind the GLC. In fourth place is BMW X3 with 10,032 sales. Closing out the top 5 is BMW X5 with 8,139 registered sales.

From January to August, Tesla Model Y sales in China were 172,418 units, up 187.84% from 59,900 units in the same period last year. It also gives the car the win and makes Model Y the best-selling premium SUV in China in 2022. Mercedes-Benz GLC came in second on the list with 101,200 units, more than 71,000 behind Model Y, a gap that is unlikely to be bridged this year. Audi Q5 finished third with 99,001 units. In fourth place is BMW X3 with 91,950 sales. In fifth place is Li Auto Li ONE with 75,396 units.

In the overall list of SUV sales in all price categories in August, Model Y came in second, behind BYD Song, which registered 42,477 units. Honda CR-V came in third with 23,441 units.

In the all-price SUV sales list for January-August, BYD Song ranked first with 242,834 units; Tesla Model Y came in second; and Great Wall Motor's Haval H6 came in third with 166,823 units.
