Tesla Sold 28K+ Cars in China for July Despite Month-Long Factory Upgrade

In July, Tesla sold over 28,000 Giga Shanghai-made cars in China. This is a strong indicator, given the fact that for a whole month, the factory's production lines were being upgraded one by one.

Tesla sold 28,217 electric vehicles from its Shanghai plant in China in July, according to a report released Tuesday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Although this represents a significant decrease from the 77,938 vehicles delivered by Giga Shanghai to the domestic market in June, it is worth bearing in mind that this is only a slight temporary slowdown.

In fact, Giga Shanghai was partially closed throughout July as it was being upgraded. In the first half of the month, the production lines for Model Y were closed, and in the second half of the month, the production lines for Model 3 were closed. Thus, under such conditions, deliveries of more than 28,000 vehicles in the domestic market is a respectable result.

A significant increase in production should be seen already in August, as the factory will start ramping up efforts to reach the installed capacity. To do this, the manufacturer continues to actively extend the team, expanding hiring for many production positions.

Ultimately, the upgrade should increase Model Y production to 2,200 vehicles a day, and Model 3 to 1,100 units. The production capacity of Tesla's Chinese factory is expected to grow to 1 million vehicles per year, which is extremely high, especially for a young factory and manufacturer. Although such production figures will not be available immediately, within a few weeks the team will reach a result that will play a key role in Tesla's delivery figures in 2022.
