Tesla welcomed Joe Gebbia as a new independent director to the board of directors, according to an 8-K filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Sept. 25. On Wednesday, the company sent out a notice to its investors announcing the news regarding changes to the company.

Gebbia is a renowned designer and entrepreneur. For the past 14 years, he has been developing Airbnb, which he co-founded. Airbnb is a platform known all over the world. The service has changed the hospitality industry by allowing travelers looking for a local experience to book accommodation in almost every country in the world, Tesla wrote about the service in its blog. As an original designer and host, Gebbia helped shape Airbnb's product, interface, and brand. In addition, he is chairman of Samara, Airbnb's design studio, and of Airbnb.org, the company's non-profit foundation.
Gebbia recently stepped down from his full-time job and moved into an advisory role, serving on the board of directors of both Airbnb and Airbnb.org. He began work on his next startup by acquiring a minority stake in the San Antonio Spurs. Gebbia gives back via his commitment to the Giving Pledge, and serves on other boards and councils such as his alma mater, the Rhode Island School of Design, the Olympic Refuge Foundation, UNHCR, Tent.org, Malala Fund, and the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity.
