78 Tesla Megapacks power Europe's largest battery storage system, which was launched in the UK on Monday. The battery energy storage system can store electricity to power 300,000 homes for two hours.

Tesla Energy is once again celebrating success: the division celebrated the launch of a battery energy storage system (BESS) consisting of 78 Megapacks on Monday in Pillswood, Cottingham, UK. This BESS is Europe's largest battery storage system and was made possible by Tesla.

BBC Science News reports that the BESS' launch has been pushed forward four months as the UK could face power shortages this winter due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The facility was developed by Harmony Energy, a renewable energy company in North Yorkshire, using technology developed by Tesla. The company has already worked with Tesla at another UK facility that was launched in partnership with Fotowatio Renewable Ventures in 2020.

The BESS at Pillswood can store up to 196 MWh of energy in a single cycle. It was built next to National Grid's Creyke Beck substation, which will be connected to Dogger Bank, the world's largest offshore wind farm when it comes online in the North Sea later this decade.

Peter Kavanagh, director of Harmony Energy, said:

“Battery energy storage systems are essential to unlocking the full potential of renewable energy in the UK and we hope this particular one highlights Yorkshire as a leader in green energy solutions.

"These projects are not supported by taxpayer subsidy and will play a major role in contributing to the Net Zero transition, as well as ensuring the future security of the UK's energy supply and reduced reliance on foreign gas imports.”

The BESS will use Tesla AI software, Autobider, to match energy supply and demand. It will be launched in two phases in December 2022 and March 2023.
