Tesla Giga Shanghai sold 56,515 vehicles in February, up 208.5% from last year. More than half of the vehicles have been exported to meet the world's growing need for Tesla vehicles.
Tesla Giga Shanghai sold 56,515 Chinese-made vehicles in February, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Although the manufacturer was able to sell 59,845 vehicles last month, it is worth considering that February was three days shorter and had one non-working week due to the Chinese New Year. Thus, Giga Shanghai produced an average of 2,690 vehicles per day throughout February, compared to 2,494 vehicles in January, which is a significant increase in production capacity. This also reflects a 208.5% increase in sales compared to February 2021.
The data also shows that Giga Shanghai exported 33,315 vehicles, down from 40,499 units shipped in January. Tesla delivered 23,200 vehicles to the Chinese market last month, up from 19,346 units in January. The distribution of vehicles shows that the manufacturer is working according to plan: in the first half of each quarter, production is focused on exports, while in the second half of the quarter, the factory produces and sells mainly in the domestic market.
Tesla cars are some of the most popular EVs in China and the demand for them is incredibly high there. Although the company has a factory in Shanghai, it is used as an export hub, making it difficult to meet local demand. However, with the start of production at Giga Berlin, the load on Giga Shanghai will gradually decrease and the factory can focus more on production for the local market.
