Tesla Model 3 took over as the 3rd best-selling car in Australia in January. Model 3 sales are more than double the sales of all electric vehicles in the country last month combined.

Tesla Model 3 was the third best-selling car in January in Australia, according to The Driven. The latest figures from the Federated Chamber of Automotive Industries show that 2,927 Model 3s were sold in January. The car was only outsold by two very popular vehicles in the domestic market, which are pickup trucks. Ford Ranger came in first with 4,749 sales and Toyota Hi-Lux came in second with 4,131 sales. Considering the popularity of pickup trucks in Australia, the achievement of the Model 3 sedan is truly remarkable.

Overall, electric vehicles accounted for 4,852 sales or 5.7% of the new car market in January. Tesla Model 3 took a 60.3% share of the EV market. Model Y sales in January were more modest, at only 386 units. The Tesla brand accounted for two-thirds of EV sales in Australia last month.

It is unusual for Tesla vehicles to dominate the market in the first month of a quarter. However, the company has indicated that it wants to move towards a more even distribution of deliveries throughout each quarter. That is why now we can observe that at the end of the quarter, a certain number of cars are still not delivered to customers and are on the way, and in the first months of the quarter, sales are growing. This trend has become pronounced since Q3 2022.
