Tesla Model Y, which went on sale in China in early 2021, continues to reach new milestones. In February 2022, the electric SUV became the best-selling premium SUV across all propulsion types, repeating the same success in the segment as last year.

Tesla Model Y outsold rival Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Audi models in China in February and became the country's best-selling premium SUV. This followed after in January, due deliveries being oriented to export, the SUV lagged behind Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3, and Audi Q5. However, in February the gap was more than closed and Tesla sold about twice as many units as each of the above models.

Model Y retail sales in China totaled 18,593 units in February, according to figures released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). This reflects an increase of 301.6% over the same period last year, when 4,630 units were sold. In addition, such sales figures are 13.6% higher than 16,358 units in January.

Such strong sales figures made Model Y the best-selling premium SUV in China in February. The Texas-based manufacturer's car, produced at Giga Shanghai, competed with the most popular ICE vehicles in the segment and outsold rival Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi by about double.

Retail sales of Mercedes-Benz GLC in China were 9,958 units in February, down 55.4% from 22,331 units in January. Sales of Audi Q5 were 8,859 units, down 48% from 17,062 units in January. Sales of BMW X3 in February were 8,819 units, down 54.9% from 19,542 units in January.

Throughout the past year, Model Y has also ruled the Chinese automotive market. Tesla sold 169,853 Model Ys in 2021, making it the best-selling premium SUV of the year in China, regardless of propulsion type.
