Tesla began producing some Model Y and Model 3 with AMD Ryzen processors and new GPUs. However, owners of older versions of the vehicles are also likely to get access to the new hardware, which could happen in the second half of 2022.

Tesla indicated at the launch of its refreshed Model S and Model X premium electric vehicles that they are using a state-of-the-art infotainment computer with performance on par with Playstation 5. A little later, AMD announced that Tesla was using their next-generation Ryzen processors along with a dedicated graphics chip (GPU).

In addition, at the end of November 2021, the company's Chinese customers shared that their Model Y Performance came with AMD Ryzen Processors & AMD GPUs. The new equipment was installed in vehicles without additional announcements from the company. Then, U.S. customers also stated that their new Model 3s have the upgraded hardware. The parts catalog for Europe indicated that new components would also be fitted to vehicles for the region.

This update is very well-received by the owners of the brand new Model Ys and Model 3s, and those who are waiting delivery. However, those owners who have vehicles without AMD Ryzen Processors and AMD GPUs should also be able to replace their existing hardware with the new version. Drive Tesla Canada, referring to its sources, said that Tesla will definitely offer a retrofit. The exact timeframe for this is unknown, but it will not happen earlier than in the second half of the year. The cost of retrofitting is also unknown.

Tesla has previously updated the infotainment system equipment and is now offering retrofitting from MCU1 to MCU2 for $1,500-2,000, depending on the version of Autopilot Computer installed in the car. While the cost of retrofitting is unknown, it is expected that it may be more expensive, as new hardware tends to have a higher price.
