EU industry chief Thierry Breton, who is currently visiting the US, was to meet with Tesla chief Elon Musk in Texas today, his spokesman told Reuters in an email. They were to discuss global supply chain issues and free speech, as part of the block's newly agreed rules requiring tech giants to do more to control online content. The meeting indeed took place, later confirmed by Musk on Twitter.

The problem of supply chains continues to be exacerbated by the Russian military attack on Ukraine. Many companies around the world had to urgently look for a solution to the problems associated with supplies from these countries. Therefore, the issue of supply chains is one of the most important that needs to be discussed. “Tech and supply chains will be high on the agenda at Tesla with Elon Musk,” Terence Zakka, spokesman for Breton, said in an email.

In addition, Breton wanted to discuss the issue of free speech, which comes amid Musk's deal to buy Twitter. “Free speech will also be on the menu between Thierry Breton and Elon Musk. So will EU regulation. Expect exchange on the Digital Services Act and how 'new' Twitter will play by European rules,” he said.

Musk achieved success in a deal to buy Twitter last month, saying to revitalize the company, expand its user base, crack down spambots, and reduce moderation to promote more free speech. According to Breton, with all future changes, Twitter must comply with new EU rules known as the Digital Services Act tackling illegal online content.

They in fact met as planned in Austin today, where the new headquarters of Tesla is located, in the building of the most high-tech factory in the world—Giga Texas. Musk on Twitter later shared his positive sentiments of the encounter: “Great meeting! We are very much on the same page.”
