Tesla continues its confident march through Europe. In September, Model 3 became the best-selling EV in Portugal. Year-to-date, combined with September‘s stellar numbers, Model 3 also became the best-selling EV in 2020 with a market share of 8%.

The overall car market in the country is still depressed, with a 39% YoY drop recorded, however plug-in registrations reached a record month. There were 1,844 registered plug-ins in September and now, the share of plug-ins is 11% in 2020, reported EV-sales.

In September, 172 Tesla Model 3s were registered in Portugal, which brought it to first place. The closest competitor—Mercedes A250e—registered 133 vehicles. Third place belongs to Volvo XC40 PHEV, with 125 registrations. Fourth is the BMW 330s with 113 units, and Renault Zoe rounds out the top 5 with 100 registrations.

3 Volvo XC40 PHEV 125
4 BMW 330s 113
5 Renault Zoe  100

If we break down the results for 2020, we can see the advantage of Model 3, which becomes the clear top-seller, with 89 more units than its closest competitor, Renault Zoe, who had 869 registrations. Overall, in nine months of 2020, Model 3 took 8% of the plugin market in Portugal.

Nissan Leaf registered 808 units, Mercedes A250e - 669, and BMW 330s - 652, which brings them into third, fourth, and fifth places respectively. An interesting observation is that there is not a single Volkswagen model in the top 20, although sales of its new ID.3 started in September.
