Tesla Giga Shanghai has produced 26,000 vehicles since resuming production a month ago after the lockdown eased. With a limited number of workers, parts, and logistical difficulties, the factory was able to achieve more than 45% production, compared to the pre-shutdown month.
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) reported via its WeChat account (via CnEVPost) that, in the first month of operation after resuming production at Giga Shanghai, the factory was able to produce 26,000 vehicles. This equates to approximately more than a 45% recovery in production compared to pre-lockdown figures, which is good performance, all things considered.
Giga Shanghai has been on its longest-ever lockdown, lasting three weeks, since March 28. On April 19, the manufacturer was allowed to start working again, albeit with strict restrictions. It is reported that about 8,000 workers were brought to the factory, which corresponds to less than half the number of all its employees. Thus, production was established in one shift.
Tesla China produced 10,757 vehicles in April, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association on May 10. This means that in the 19 days of May, Giga Shanghai produced 15,243 vehicles, with an average of 802 vehicles per day. An internal memo seen by Reuters showed that as of May 23, the factory had reached a production capacity of 1,000 vehicles per day, and aims to boost that significantly this week to 16,000 vehicles per week.
During the period from April 19 to May 19, the manufacturer was able not only to start delivering Model 3 and Model Y to the local market, but also to start exporting. On May 11, the carrier vessel, Glovis Splendor, sailed for Europe with 4,767 Tesla vehicles to the port of Koper, Slovenia. This marked the first export of Tesla’s electric vehicles since the resumption of production at Giga Shanghai. On May 15, Giga Shanghai shipped a new batch of more than 4,000 vehicles. Thus, about 9,000 vehicles have already been shipped from China.
