Recently it became known that Tesla plans to invest about $200 million in significantly expanding Giga Shanghai. The new information indicates that eventually, thanks to the expansion, the factory will increase production capacity to 1-1.5 million units per year in 2022.
It was recently revealed that Tesla plans to invest up to RMB 1.2 billion (about $188 million) to expand Giga Shanghai's production facilities. According to figures obtained by the state-based newspaper Beijing Daily, this should provide an additional 4,000 jobs. Thus, the number of people who will work at the factory will increase to 19,000 people.
According to Tesla's report, the production line optimization project will focus on the expansion of the press shop, body shop, paint shop, final assembly shop and logistics operation center. This increase in jobs and expansion of the main workshops at the factory indicates a significant increase in the production capacity of Giga Shanghai.
At this point, Giga Shanghai has already achieved an incredibly large production capacity. In October, 54,391 vehicles were sold in just 24 working days there. While this figure is not a production figure, it is logical to expect that around 54,000 units were produced. This also means that production at the Chinese factory could already reach a whopping 806,000 units. With the new expansion, this figure will easily surpass 1 million units produced per year, but it looks like it could be even more.
@bentv_sh/Twitter (aka Wu Wa/YouTube), who follows updates on Giga Shanghai and often publishes accurate information about Tesla's plans in China, said the manufacturer has ambitious plans for next year. According to an unnamed source, the manufacturer plans to increase production capacity to 1-1.5 million units in 2022, thanks to the new expansion.

At the moment, video of flights over Giga Shanghai shows that Tesla has already begun construction of some new buildings. Most likely, this work is part of the extension referred to in the report. For a number of significant reasons, the manufacturer's Chinese factory has become its export hub, so an increase in production capacity there is an extremely sensible step.
