Tesla is hiring an important minerals strategist in Canada, further fueling rumors that the manufacturer's new factory will be built there.

Tesla has hired a new Canadian employee specializing in critical minerals and the supply chain, the latest Quebec lobbying registry filings have shown, according to Electric Autonomy. Aleem Ladak is a mining engineer and formerly a senior mineral economist and battery mineral advisor at the Ontario Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines. According to his LinkedIn profile, Ladak handles Tesla's Government Policy, Critical Minerals & Supply Chain. He started work at the company in August 2022.

In April, Tesla began searching for an experienced Senior Policy Associate in Canada to work on a variety of matters related to light- and heavy-duty vehicle regulation in addition to a particular focus on global battery minerals and responsible sourcing policy. The company explained that in this position, a successful candidate must oversee the development of public policy related to battery supply chains and sustainable energy, in addition to electric and autonomous vehicles, while serving at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels of government. In addition, the employee should keep the Tesla team informed of new rules or changes to old ones and ensure compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and legal requirements in designated jurisdictions. According to the role description, Ladak could be an ideal candidate.

The hiring of this key new employee comes amid rumors that Tesla is looking to build a factory in Canada. In early September, the manufacturer posted a job opening for “a high volume, an extraordinary recruiter,” who will successfully identify talent and recruit them to work for the company, further hinting at Tesla’s growth in the country.

It should be kept in mind that despite hiring employees and lobbying the government, the company does not disclose the goals of the new facility. It is only known that it can produce something; this can apply both to cars and the extraction and/or processing of materials for the production of batteries, as well as the actual production of batteries. As promised by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the company will reveal the location of the new factory as early as this year. Whether it will be in Canada or elsewhere will be known soon, possibly during the Q3 2022 earnings call.
