Tesla leads the California electric vehicle market in Q1 2023 with a 46% share. The manufacturer's cars continue to be highly popular among Californians, occupying a 9.7% share of the state's automotive market.
The California Energy Commission reported new zero emission vehicle (ZEV) sales, which include sales of battery-electric vehicles (BEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV), and fuel cell vehicles (FCEV). Cumulative sales for Q1 2023 were 124,053 units. Total passenger car sales in California last quarter reached 588,455 vehicles, which means that the share of ZEVs reached 21.1%, which is a great achievement. The cumulative sales of ZEVs during the tracked time in the state amounted to more than 1.5 million units.
In the first quarter of 2023 in California, BEVs accounted for 77.3% of sales (95,946 units). PHEVs accounted for 21.9%. FCEVs accounted for 0.7%. Combined over the entire time tracked, BEVs accounted for 69% of ZEV sales in the state (1,051,456 units), PHEVs for 30% of sales (457,078 units), and FCEVs for 1% (15,432 units).
30% of all ZEV sales in the state in the first quarter were in Los Angeles County (36,670 units). It is followed by Orange County (15,289 units, 12%); Santa Clara County (11,428 units, 9%); San Diego County (10,833 units, 8.7%); and Alameda County (8,198 units, 6.6%). This means that these five counties accounted for 66.4% of the state's total ZEV sales in the first quarter.
Tesla is still the unattainable leader in the State. The manufacturer's vehicles accounted for 46% of all ZEV sales in the first quarter, and that is with only four models. Model Y is in first place with 33,205 units (26.8%), Model 3 is in place with 19,989 units, Model X is in fifth with 3,101. Model S registered 887 sales. To date, there is not a single manufacturer that could even approach Tesla’s results and provide legitimate competition.
With 57,182 units sold in the first quarter, Tesla has a 9.7% car market share in California, a stellar result.
NEWS: As of Q1 2023, California has now cumulatively surpassed 1 million battery electric vehicle sales. @Tesla had a record Q1, with the Model Y leading the CA BEV market with 6.3x as many sales as the next best-selling non-Tesla BEV.
